How to Connect Power BI to an Excel File
Introduction
Before connecting your Power BI template to your Excel file, ensure that both files are stored in the same folder. This simplifies the connection process and avoids errors later.
- Download the PBIX and Excel templates from CraftedBI and move them into the same folder.
- Double-click on the PBIX file to open it in Power BI Desktop.
- Once the PBIX file opens, navigate to the top-left corner of the screen and click on "File."
Store the PBIX and Excel templates in the same folder for a seamless connection.

Inside Power BI, click on 'File' in the top-left corner.

Once inside the Power BI Desktop, follow these steps to update the data source:
- In the "File" menu, click "Options and Settings."
- From the dropdown, select "Data source settings."
- In the Data source settings window, click "Change Source."
Click 'Options and Settings' in the File menu.
Open the Data source settings window to update the file path.
Select 'Change Source' to update the Excel connection.

Now you'll connect your template to the correct Excel file:
- After clicking "Change Source," click "Browse" in the pop-up window.
- Navigate to the folder where you saved the PBIX and Excel files and select the Excel file.
- Confirm your selection, close the settings window, and allow Power BI to refresh. You’ll see the refreshing process complete, and your data is now connected and ready to use!
